Want To Be Successful? Act Like It.

Social

Since I decided three years ago to start an art business, I’ve struggled to find my niche. First I wanted to draw landscapes. Do you know how hard it is to draw a rock?

Then I thought, why not animals? Everyone loves a good wildlife picture. Then I realized I lacked serious skills to make that work.

Then there was my love of photography. Awesome idea, become a landscape photographer! Still, need to improve that skill. In the end my quest to figure out what I wanted to create and be known for hurt my success.

Why? Because I was lost. I wasn’t choosing success.

When I say I wasn’t choosing success, I don’t mean you can be successful simply thinking it up. It takes work.

But it takes a successful mindset.

The Successful Mind

Any business or project takes work. Overnight success happens after years of effort and work. Unless you’re dropping tons of cash on lottery tickets, that overnight success requires an attitude of success.

The best way to start yourself down the path to success is to start acting successfully. Here are 5 steps to act like the CEO of your art gig:

  1. Live in the present. The past is history. Like Elsa said, let it go. We all hold onto our past failures and struggles as if they were helping us right now. All this does, his hurt your current progress. So you got rejected 100 times. Learn from those failures and aim for acceptance on try number 101.
  2. Talk like you belong. Having a successful mindset and attitude is talking like you belong in the crowd. Or at the least, speak like you are already there. I don’t mean you should live in a dream world but envision where you want your business to be and talk about it.
  3. Read the stories of others. Someone came before you. Learn from their struggles and realize it’s part of the journey. Reading how other entrepreneurs and leaders built the life they wanted is inspiring and educational.
  4. Dress for success. You’ve heard this before but it’s true. Every job interview I ever went on, even if it was in high school to stock shelves, I dressed to the nines. Why? Because I believed in my own success and I wanted my prospective employer to believe it too. With the art business, I want prospective buyers to see I’m serious about my work and I want them to realize the quality they’re paying for.
  5. Take your work seriously. But don’t take yourself too seriously. Be serious and into your work. You are your first and best champion. If you don’t believe in your work, who else will? But please don’t take yourself too seriously. Very few artists can pull-off that, “I’m the best artist ever and my work is the sh&# so buy it,” attitude. You’re not one of them. Or maybe you are, but people still won’t like you. So be real. Be yourself.

Wrap Up

Success is what you make it, so make your mindset about your art business successful. You know what you want to achieve with your art, picture it and go for it. But live in the present and remember your success requires effort and time.

Go. Be. Create.
