Leadership ain’t easy. Each leader has a unique style. But each leader uses different styles and methods throughout the day when leading their teams. Each of us strive to be good leaders. Regardless of what our roles, every supervisor and manager wants their subordinates to see them as a true leader. Regardless of your position and leadership style, there are three leadership tools that are universal.
Your team’s productivity is the measurement of your success as a leader. How do you build an effective team and lead others successfully? You act and be a real human. Being human, is far easier than one would think.
Open Your Ears and Your Heart As the Leader
Too many managers and leaders try too hard. They get caught up in their own ego. They don’t see past themselves.
“To be successful, you really have to put your ego in the background and try to be diplomatic to achieve what you want to achieve.”
My own leadership roles taught me three key ways to be effective and not suffer the ego fail:
- Listen. Leaders need to listen. You don’t have to like what you hear. You don’t have to agree with what you hear, but you need to listen. Every person wants acknowledgment. To be human is to listen.
- Be open. Leaders must be open to new ideas. Don’t let yourself get boxed-in to what was or what you think is best. Listen to others ideas. Listen to your staff, they know things you don’t.
- Reject with respect. You listen. Your open to new ideas. In the end, you are not required to accept and implement what you hear. But if you reject the idea, do it with respect. Respect everyone on your team.
Respect is the key to everything you do. By listening and being open, you show respect. When it comes time for you to say no, it comes from a place of constructive thought and positive power.
Go and listen to your team and anyone else in your life. Apply these leadership tools to all your relationships.
